Creative Expression: How Art Therapy Benefits Senior Citizens

Message from Kristi Krueger, Local 10 Reporter, to Kangana Modi, Co-CEO of Palette of Life

Thank you for giving me the platform to write about the importance of art therapy, especially for our senior citizens. I have been a TV news anchor and medical reporter for more than 30 years.   During that time, I have produced numerous reports regarding the benefits of art therapy.   It helps people of all ages gain self-understanding and process their emotional changes.   Many therapists prescribe art therapy to help their patients cope with loss and grief.   With seniors, in particular, art therapy has been proven to improve mood, cognitive skills, and muscle coordination.   Through art, seniors can reduce their pain,  stress and anxiety.    Art is a wonderful way to improve our seniors’ quality of life!

I also wear another hat.  I am a Board Member with the South Florida Alzheimer’s Association.    The disease hit close to home, as my father, a brilliant, funny, and tough professional football coach, suffered from dementia.  It affected our whole family for many years.   When my Dad passed away in 2020, I vowed to help other families, like mine,  by volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association.  One thing I am very proud of is connecting you and Palette Of Life with the Alzheimer’s Association and various Assisted Living Facilities in South Florida.  What joy you are bringing to so many lives!  Many seniors find it tough to communicate with people because of physical or mental deterioration, but thanks to your art therapy, patients are able to express themselves better and have fun at the same time.   Congratulations and keep up the awesome work you are doing!
